Building a HAWK School Community

Building a HAWK School Community

Each year Half Day does a deep dive into what it means to be a HAWK – Honest, Accepting, Willing, and Kind-Hearted. Last week, students participated in activities as seen in these photos to show how they accept one another, show kindness, and demonstrate a willingness to be a team player with classmates. In addition students collected food to help resupply the local pantry.

These monthly activities are part of the school’s social-emotional learning lessons to help students build strong relationships, practice empathy, and create a positive school culture. Teachers guide discussions that encourage students to reflect on their actions and words. Through these lessons, students learn that being a HAWK isn’t just about good behavior—it’s about helping others feel valued and included every day.

By practicing honesty, acceptance, willingness, and kindness, Half Day students strengthen not only their classroom communities but also their confidence to make thoughtful choices both in and out of school.

“During HAWK week, our Student Council worked hard to collect pasta, canned soup, and canned or dried beans for The Vernon Area Township Food Pantry — and thanks to our amazing students and families, we gathered and delivered over 250 boxes of pasta and canned goods to help those in need in our community! Thank you to everyone who donated and supported this wonderful cause!” said Rebecca Gurson, who sponsors the group with Katie Weinstein.
